I own many books about flowering plants and Roy Morey's Little Big Bend is among my favorites. His book has given me a greater understanding and appreciation for an area I have visited many times over the years and grown to love.
Mr. Morey begins his book with an overview of the park's geography and the remarkable diversity of Chihuahuan desert plant life found in this climate of extremes. He discusses the history of the region and how human inhabitants changed the harsh landscape in their efforts to eke out a living.
He explains the binomial naming system and its importance in plant identification and follows with a complete listing of all 252 plants organized by scientific family name and corresponding common names. It's a convenient index referencing page numbers where the plants are pictured.
The plant pages follow. The heading consists of the most common name and the scientific name. Other common names and physical description of plant and blooms are noted as well as where the species may be found inside and outside of the park. Further interesting information are the names and dates of those who first described the plant and how the scientific name was derived.
Mr. Morey is an accomplished photographer. He has taken great care to control light and contrast to make his subjects a valuable part of the identification process. Most images are quarter page while others offer two photos to better reveal leaf structure or close ups of blooms.
The book itself is 71/2 x 10 inches, soft cover, quite sturdy, and is printed on quality paper to enhance the photos.
Little Big Bend is a valuable guide and reference book that will serve while in the field and afterwards while reflecting on your finds. It will be among my essential gear on my next trek to Big Bend country.
