In February, 2012, Big Bend National Park received the designation of Gold Tier International Dark Sky Park, by the International Dark-Sky Association for excellence in night sky stewardship. A Gold Tier designation denotes a sky free from all but the most minor impacts of light pollution. Data from the National Park Service Night Sky Team shows that the Big Bend Region has the darkest measured skies in the lower 48 states. With an area of over 801,000 acres, Big Bend National Park is also the largest International Dark Sky Park to date.

The Works Progress Administration (WPA) posters of the 1930s encouraged the public to "See America" through our National parks.  But the parks that protect the landscape we see by day also preserve our view of star-filled skies at night.  This new series of posters once again reminds us of the beauty of our parks project.
